Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

I was in a mediation session with a divorcing couple recently, and they were discussing something that was outside of my area of expertise. I started out with “I have a friend who…” The wife interrupted me and said light-heartedly “you have a LOT of friends!”

I do!

I had already referred them to another colleague or 2 to help them through other specific issues, and it was about to happen again.

This couple is now at the very end of their divorce. It was tense at times, as divorces can be, but they’ve done it, with the help of some expert professionals supporting them on their journey.

I’m so grateful when people invite me on their journey of transitioning to the next chapter of their family’s life in a divorce. With my years of both personal and professional experience, I’m proud of my skills as a mediator. And at the same time, I don’t claim to be an expert in everything.

That’s where I call in my friends!

I have so many wonderful and talented colleagues who have become friends, including mortgage specialists, financial advisors, parent coaches, real estate agents, attorneys, therapists, and estate planners, to name a few. I trust these people with the clients I come to care about, and I am happy to bring in the reinforcements when my clients need additional support.

Most often, my clients will go out and have a meeting or 2 with whichever other professional can help them, and then they will come back to my office armed with the information gained with the other professional, and we will continue the mediation process with that new information.

This collaborative mindset is why Angie and I began The Divorce Support Collective. We recognize the value of trust, relationships, and community, and we want to provide that to both divorce professionals and the community. Our friends.
